If you make your own mince pies add some grated cooking apple to the mincemeat - it takes a lot of the sweetness away, and also makes them more moist.

A neighbour's daughter once made some mice pies and delivered them around the houses. However, she had made them with minced meat (not mincemeat) together with candied fruit!!! There were several cases of upset stomachs that Christmas I can tell you.
