Why do some lentils need soaking - and others don't?

Red kidney beans, black kidney and aduki beans, black-eyed beans and borlotti beans need pre-boiling before cooking. This is very important for black and red kidney beans as they contain toxins in the outer skin, when raw. These can cause illness. Boiling them vigorously for about 15 minutes before you add them to a dish destroys these toxins.
