What is the spice used in Indian cooking that turns rice yellow?

Generally it is turmeric which is a yellow/orange rhizome a bit like ginger but without much taste. On special occasions it would be coloured with saffron which does have a very distinct taste and yellow colour.
I believe the spice is ground turmeric.
Barry is correct. However Turmeric can be very tasty but must be brolied or fryed for at least 10 minutes to benefit from its special flavour.
