Because there is just me, buying a whole lettuce seems silly, so I buy bags of lettuce leaves (with added herbs) etc, but how do I keep the leaves crispy for more than a day??

Old chef trick, this!!!...

Run a sink of icy cold water and empty the leaves into it. This will refresh them.
Take them out and dry as best you can without bruising the leaves (a salad spinner is ideal).
Take some kitchen paper (or ideally, the thicker kitchen tissue if you can) and plunge it in the water. Wring out so it's only just damp, and place a piece in the bottom of a bowl or whatever you're using to keep your leaves in. Place your leaves in, then put another sheet of dampened tissue on top. You'll be amazed at how fresh it keeps the salad!
I'm glad someone else asked this, I thought it was just my supermarket as the fruit and veg in general seems to go off very quickly.
I do a shop for the week and end up throwing half of it away.
The bags of leaves are great but they don't seem to keep well and end up mushy at the bottom
I'll try that too donquixote, thanks
Bags of salad don't last one minute! Buy a lettuce!! Carve a bit off the edge and then wrap it in clingfilm. Next time you use it you may need to carve off the end but it will be fine under that. Lasts longer than a bag o bits!
Cheaper too!!!!!
Sainsburys sell "living lettuce", it's a red leaf and a green leaf variety both in the sanme pot which you can put on the windowsill and just pull off the leaves as you need them. last week I kept one going for about three weeks before it bolted
Well you might like to know that prepackaged lettuce is washed in a chlorine solution 20 times more concentrated than in the average swimming pool!! So I buy Little gems or those romaine hearts ( or whatever theyre called). Pull off the leaves as i need them and they keep fresh and crispy for ages:-)
Yes, bagged salad has various gases added that keeps it fresh until you open it. The second the bag is opened then whoomph it makes contact with normal air and it rapidly deteriorates. With the recent scare stories of salmonella in bagged salads I'd not buy them again!
