In cookery-books, the rough-and-ready conversion is usually given as 1 ounce = 25 grams; with 16 ounces per pound, that = 400 grams.

I've always heard 454g as well, and I used to sell 1Lb Xmas puddings so I should know!

This is another of those questions, like "where is timbuktu?" that could be answered from almost any reference book. The complete answer is that one pound =453.59237 g (exactly). This number was chosen so as to be divisible by 7, because there are (or were) 7000 grains in 1 lb. Thus, converting grams to grains and vice versa would be possible without running into recurring decimals.
