For the last few years I have been using one of those margarines that claim to help lower cholesterol. Now there seems to be more and more claims that the hydroginated oil used in margarine is potentially worse for you than the saturated fats in butter. I don't know what to believe any more. Should I stick with margarine or use butter instead?

The only way butter or any margarine can benefit your health is by avoiding them entirely.

I use butter. It is natural and I like it. I also have dripping on toast. :)

But I don't need to worry because my cholesterol is never above 4.7 - if I had high cholesterol I would give up the dripping.

Have you got a cholesterol problem?
Margarine is one molecule away from plastic !
I would rather have butter any day . My cholesterol was a bit high but then again my doctor is a high cholesterol fanatic. and gives everyone a pep talk about it .
Whereas Ethels is 4.7 mine was 5.2 ..shock horror ! But I take a low dose stativastin to counteract it and eat my butter with a clear conscience .

Thanks for your replies. The last cholesterol check I had read 4.7 but there is a family history of high cholesterol so I am trying to keep things in check with diet and exercise.
And if margarine is "one molecule away from plastic" LOL
I think I'll treat myself to some nice anchor butter at the weekend.
