Forget a meal in a restaurant, come away from Berwick a bit - 8 miles from the town on the scottish border is a village called Etal. There is a looovely tearoom there in a very picturesque setting, where my mum and dad the owners will serve you will a lovely strawberry clotted cream tea in the gardens. http://www.fordetal.co.uk/evpo.asp
PS...according to my map it's 9.5 miles from Berwick to Etal but once there you could also visit the scenic Heatherslaw light railway and corn mill.....sounds very very!
Depends where you are in Berwick, sft42. If Elaine is visiting Berwick, it's likely s/he will be using the A1 to the West. Etal is 8 miles from there.
And the light railway is fantastic! Great for adults and kids alike, it's a 3.5 mile trip on the banks of the River Till on a 15" gauge steam engine ("Lady Augusta") or "Clive", the Diesel. Just 'phone 01890...
In the interests of keeping nepotism out of this, I can vouch for the loveliness of Etal and how good the railway is. I can also recommend the tearooms (though they seem to have been done up since I was last there, looking at the photos). The pub which I think is opposite is also excellent.
I can also recommend an excellent Indian restaurant in Berwick. Can't remember the name I'm afraid but it was in an imposing building in Bridge Street just round the corner from Hide Hill.
