Pineapple Pieces in Cans

I'm puzzled about how on earth pineapple canners manage to reassemble pineapple rings in cans out of pineapple pieces. It seems to me to be a remarkable feat and the sort of thing they'd invent some sort of robotic system to do. Or is it possible that the rings are sliced in situ in the cans before or after the syrup or juice is poured in? Does anyone know how this is done? Thanks.

I imagine the pineapple is mechanically peeled and cored within a holder. The holder has several horizontal blades that simultaneously slice the pineapple in to rings, and drops it into the can.

Thanks Ethel. I can indeed visualise such a system as you suggest, but I was thinking of pineapple pieces not rings. When a can of pineapple pieces is opened, the pineapple ring can be seen neatly cut into over a dozen segments inside the can. Each successive pineapple ring is cut up in the same way. I can't see how these individual segments can be held together to enable them to be dropped into the can.

The rings are in the can, and a vertical, can size cutter descends from above.

I know it was a strange question, but it just seems that canners are going to a whole lot of trouble to do this when they could just drop a known weight of segments into a can and chuck in the juice or syrup after it.

Its market forces, minesapint, market forces! It would appear that people want their pineapple in certain ways and the 'canners' satisfy this demand, what ever it may be. Good question though.

I suppose it's also the best "use" of the space available? As if they were just dumped in the can, surely you'd end up with less fruit per can.....(I'm bored! lol)

It's no wind up hammerman. I genuinely wanted to know the answer. Only a complete idiot would assume that there are people out there that assumed that pineapple grew in cans.

i suggest you buy a can of pineapple chunks and see for yourself.
