Is there anyway of knowing when an avocado is ready to eat? When I buy them, they are either too hard or going brown when I peel them.

Place index finger and thumb on top & bottom and gently squeeze.....if soft they're ready.....check again on body of fruit to be certain. Most supermarkets having a quick turnover seem only to sell hard fruit (take 3-4 days to soften).

I buy mine from asian shops, cheaper and riper and rarely black inside.........woe betide my shop and they know it!

Thanks Terambulan for a quick answer. I will definitely try that.
Also, if they're not quite ripe, pop them in a paper bag and leave in a dark cupboard - they'll soften in a day or two.

I tend to buy the dark skinned ones - delicious :)
I heard somewhere that if you put unripened avocados in a paper bag with kiwi fruit they will ripen quicker.
