Petrol for Diesel

Today I filled my car diesel car up with what I thought was 60 literes of diesel. I drove for about 8 miles and my car ground to a halt. Unable to start it I rang a mobile mechanic and explained the symtems to him. He said it sounds like you have put petrol in the car have a smell of your fuel filler and you will easily tell. Sure enough it smells of petrol. However I am quite sure I put diesel in and my receipt even says I put diesel in and I was charged the diesel rate. I have been back to Tesco and they have checked the pump and sure enough diesel came out. However I have a tank full of petrol and will be going back in the morning to see a manager. Has anyone ever heard of this happening before. If there are any boffins out there can this be a mechanical fault of the pump. The bottom line is I have a tank full of petrol and the receipt shows I paid for diesel

could this have happened?? the person who used the pump before you put the diesel trigger back on the petrol holder, and vice versa.

when you picked up the trigger from the diesel side of the pump, you actually picked up a petrol pipe? you may not have noticed they'd been switched. you thought you were filling up diesel, but you had a petrol trigger feeding your car.

just a thought. have known jokers switch them around for a supposed laugh.

my receipt does say pump 2 diesel and the price at 107.9p per litre. 60.13litre cost 64.88.

in a pump switch scenario like i mentioned, when you pick up a petrol pipe and handle, the diesel trigger still registers, if that is where the trigger was sat when you selected it, so this would explain why your receipt says diesel, but there is petrol in your car...

I think this most likely explaination, cant think of another anyway....

pump nozzels where not swopped. I have asked the cashier can they check CCTV to see what nozzel I used and they have said they can. If nozzels had been swopped why would receipt show diesel and diese price per litre??

s'only one i can think of, other than you just selecting wrong pump completely..

really hope you get some good news tomorrow, and dont end up forking out on new engine....fingers crossed for you...

I reckon there is something else wrong with your car, and you didn't put petrol in.

Mystery solved
althogh I was convinced of the smell of petrol as was my brother. I checked it this morning and no smell off petrol. I syphoned a sample and it was diesel. The mobile mechanic came round and my cam belt has gone, wish I had put petrol in instead of diesel it would have been cheaper. I had to put some water in the car 2 weeks ago the first time in 5 years and then had to put a bit more in last week. The mechanic thinks that was the start of my water pump failing which ultimately packed in and caused the damage. So the lesson is when you have a cam belt changed have the water pump changed as I was advised by a garage I tokk it to this morning.
