Hi, my daughter has a stomach bug she is vomitting and has diarrhea, it got so bad on thurs night - no wet nappie, refused all food and drink - she was admitted to hospital with dehydration, she had to have a nasal gastric tube to give her dioralyte.
She is now back at home, vommitting started again last night. diarrhea has slowed but not stopped, she still has no wet nappies. She refuses all solids and most milk, juice, water, dioralyte etc. We've even tried pinning her down and syringing it into her mouth as the hosp told us to but she gets so upset she's sick!
Is there a minimum amount of fluids she should take in 24hours? She is 8 1/2 months old and weighs just under 15lbs. She would normally have 19oz of milk per day plus solids
I'm getting quite worried now as she just isn't herself and she sounds odd. I'll be taking her to the docs tomorrow, but any advice will be appreciated.
I know nothing about human babies, but saw this post in the box on the front page and would just like to say I would not be on the computer if this was one of my dogs, I would be at the vets (or hospital in your case).
Had the same problem with my daughter when she was 6 months old. I would go to the hospital. In my experience they are really patient and caring, and so what if you feel like an over anxious mum, this is your baby and better to be safe than sorry.
I'm sure this will be quickly resolved. All the best.
sorry for appalling spelling in the above post, i have abrain injury that affects my ability to recognise when I made mistakes sometimes. I meant of course, call the locum service
i expect youve taken the advice and taken her to the hospital or called the out of hopurs doctor hun.
Just want to wish her well and a speedy recovery.
Thanks for all your answers/concern about Nancy. I finally got her to drink 4oz of milklast night, not much I know and prob not as good as water or dioralyte but enough for us all to get some sleep. She still has diarrhea and although she's just had 5oz of milk for breakfast I'm taking her to the docs later anyway just to be on the safe side!! I'll leave an update when we get back
Does anyone have an idea for a daily mimnimum amout of fluids so that I have something to aim for today?
We just got back from the docs, he checked her over and said that, although the symptoms I described - lethargy, no tears, stopped dribbling - were signs of dehydration, she seems quite well this morning. :-)
He also said as long as i get a minimum of 10oz of liquid (doesn't matter what) into her every 24hrs she should be ok?!
oh im glad things are improving k8 its terribly scary when you cant do anything to stop the sikness. Baby CRX had pretty much same thing a couple of weeks ago and it was 3 days of vomitting then a further week of diarrhoea before it cleared.
If shes keeping some milk down then thats a great start.
tip for diarrhoea is to feed a teaspoon or so of grated apple.
also arrowroot is good for upset tummies so if you feel she may want to eat then maybe you could try with arrowroot biscuits or plain rusks.
arrowroot biscuits are in the supermarket with all plain biscuits, they look a bit like rich tea.
i have no idea why the grated apple works but when amelia was ill and its was literally running out of her and soaking everything i gave her the apple and the next nappy was a bit thicker. She then improved each time.
