basic help needed
8 Answers
Help please,I have asked before and have gratefully received suggestions which I have carried out, but I am so fed up with this computer which is new and which bugs me all ways. I want to down load things and up comes a message - your security settings won't let you do this. On my old computer I could do anything! I have to go back to the beginning I suppose, but I am now so confused I don't know what is the beginning! This is a Compaq Home Basic - couldn't be simpler - but I seem to have lost some things - for instance, I wanted to listen to Classic Fm Hall of Fame over the weekend - couldn't do it - the mystery is that I could do it when I bought the thing (in February). I have got Windows Media Player up on my desktop, why doesn't it work? How can I change my security settings to do this, or will it let in lots of bugs? If you are reading this and have helped me in the past, please don't be exasperated - you couldn't be more cross than I am. Help. please

But I am should not need to pay for help when the thing is not yet six months old, let alone a year...thank you all the same, Lew....
Your answer, Troll, is better, but - I have already clicked on that website, up comes the message on the information bar that my security settings do not allow websites to use ActiveX controls installed on my computer. The obvious thing is to uninstall them , but what about security? If I google activex will I learn everything?

ignore lew ... he's just a sad spam merchant trying to sell a useless piece of software (allegedly) on a site that bans spam
if you take the trouble to google anything you'll learn something
you also need to give all the info and error messages ... you didn't mention activex
however
from the clasic page I pointed to
make sure you have ie7 and media player 11
NOT ie8
and then

Gosh, Troll, you're brilliant! I have no time at the moment - supposed to be working! but I clicked on your bottom info link and up came what I want - I do not know if I have ie7 or ie8, no time to look (how do I find out -see what an ignoramus I am) but I shall certainly PRINT out the instructions given and go from there. Thank you very much, may be listening by the end of the day! (How do I get BBC lplayer?!!!) I do Google things, shall devote an hour to this and see what I see. Thank you very much, you're a star!
to find out if you have IE9 or 7 open IE and click on the help menu and then about internet explorer (same as how you find out what version of pretty much any software you have)
for BBC iPlayer click below (you can add it to your bookmarks once the page has loaded)

Thanks Chuck for your help - I am sorry I have not replied sooner - had a bad back - which no doubt although feels better will come on again after I get down to some serious gardening. No way could I have crouched over this thing (I know I shouldn't be crouched, but I am). Anyway, I did click on to bbc iplayer, but I could not get anything. I am fed up with the whole damn thing - is it because my computer is not man enough - it is a Compaq - with windows vista home basic - is it too primitive to get these things? You may not see this message as I have been so tardy so I am going to do another message asking all this, sorry to be a pest, but my back, my back, damn everything!
In spite of all this, thank you for your help.
Gardenmad.
