Banana is right, it can be used to ripen a lot of food in that way, but that can also be a negative in the sense that bananas should never be kept in your fruit basket as the chemicals they give off will prematurely ripen your other fruits

Keep some ripe tomatoes in there with them or put the green tomatoes and a ripe one in a paper bag.
