Dog addicted to butter

One of my dogs has become addicted to butter and will go to any lengths to get it. I plan to spike a pack (that's generally what she eats..full packs) with something to put her off. Putting the butter away is not an option wen in other people houses and she has learn't to cease every opportunity.
Any suggestions for a safe substance to spike the butter with?

Can't help - but when I use too much butter it upsets my stomach, try explaining to her that eating butter is bad for her. Being a female she will be pretty intelligent.

Ah, a constructive answer from Lankeela. Train her how? Keep her under control how (when working on a farm). Quite happy to accept realistic suggestions though.

The answer (though possibly too late for you Bigeye) is to train your dog BEFORE you let it have complete freedom to do as it pleases. It will then be under your control even when not on the lead.

1. It's a 5 yr old dog that has discovered butter in the last 4 months
2.She spends a lot of time on my parents farm. I am not in the position to change all their door handles to round knobs.
3. I am not in a position to tell them how to organise their kitchen.
4. Reaonable and detailed suggestions how to deal with the problem on please

Well if you parents dont want their butter knicked, surely they can put it in a cupboard?

I would do but it's not a desperate problem that I feel I need to seek proffesional advice for. Also, in my experience I haven't found vets to be experts on dog behavior.

Let me make myself clear. I want to stop the problem of one of my dogs being an opportunist butter thief. THIEF is the operative word here not BUTTER. Does anyone have any experience of dealing with this type of issue?

Well, if I left a roast chicken out on the table within the dogs reach, and left the house for a few hours, I would probably come back to an empty plate. Does that give you any clues as to what to do with the butter?

leave it out with the roast chicken and some bread so the dog can have a sandwich?

I'm not talking about leaving the dog in the kitchen for 2 hours with a pack of butter. I'm talking about working outside with the dog, she disappears for 1 minute and reappears licking her lips. The other dogs (3 of them) haven't gone anywhere. I'm also talking about cooking on the stove and just behind my back she counter surfs the butter away. Jules please don't reply with anymore bone comments!!!

We have a whippet cross that does this Not with butter but catfood on the worktop, It is a very hard thing to break as once they know they can do it at any opportunity they will, Our charlie very rarely does it now and did not do it with me down stairs but if i was to go upstairs within me reaching the landing she has had it allready, One good tip i was told was the old fashioned method was to place some books that were half on and half off the worktop and place something that makes alot of clatter on the book so that when they jump up they put there paws on top of the books and brings the items down on them ( I do not mean bricks or heavy items) just something that startles them until they get the message, good luck.

Empty tin cans would work the same Josaphine, but bigeye has said she is not in a position to tell her parents and/or friends how to reorganise their kitchen, so suppose this is out of the question. That wasnt a bone comment either BTW.

i remember hearing someone who put double sided sticky tape on the worktops and the dog didnt like the feeling on its paws!??not very good to b giving advice to you yet..only just got a dog, and a total slating on here too!!! but best of luck anyhow bigeye!! i think the pepper sounded good....maby would run through her though.....xx
