Whiskey or whisky?

I remember being told once that it is only real  (Irish or Scottish?) whisk(e)y if spelt with an 'e'.  Anyone else heard this and is it true?

Scotch whisky, Irish whiskey.

Also American and Canadian Whiskey
Scotch is whisky, all others are whiskey

Whiskey with an "e" for "Eire" is Irish whiskey.

Easy, innit? :-)

And of course there's Welsh whisky, aka Southern Comfort...................................
