What are the ingredients?

I've never used a jar of white sauce so can't really comment.

just checked the ingrediants:

water, veg oil, maize starch, skimmed milk powder, sugr, dried egg yolk, slat, acidity regulator, yeast extract, stabiliser, black pepper, ground nutmeg.
Smell? What of? - it may smell a little...garlicky i suppose, I don't know I always make my own bechamel - to be on the safe side, i wouldn't eat it....
I can't see there being a problem with it. How was it when it was cooked?
Question Author
mericasounds, it smells gone off milk. :-S ive already eaten it, but i scrapped all that white sauce off......
Question Author
ummm the white sauce dosnt taste the same to the lasagne i normally have from restaurants or ready made ones...
hi whitbears
i made a lasagne for the first time too the other night, a veg one, and i used a jar of tesco white lasagne sauce 78p for a big jar.
there wasnt hardly any smell attall and it wasnt lumpy as such, it was just fairly thick and i had to spread it out with the back of a spoon.
it all tasted really lovely when it was all cooked with no strange taste..
so im not sure why yours smelt so perculiar, im sure...?
As a point of principle it's best never to eat anything that revolts you - nature gives you that response for a reason. If you can retrieve the container and take it back to the store you should point this out to them and ask for a refund.
Question Author
hmm looby, i really think my jar of the white sauce have gone bad...
yeah, it doesnt sound right smelling so bad as you say it does, and like i said with the jar i used there wasnt much smell attall, if any..
maybe you should do as mosaic says and take the jar back to the shop.
i wonder if the seal on the lid had been 'popped' while the jar was still on the shop shelf, thus making it go off..?
Question Author
well i really dont want to take the jar back (still have half jar left) because its not convenient i only went to Asda because i was visiting a friend and Asda isnt close where i live. I have sent them an email so hopefully they can investigate??
ah right i see, yeah it would be more hassle than anything going back to the shop wouldnt it if you dont live near.
well lets hope you get a satisfactory response from them eh,
let us know how you get on!

just had another sniff and looked at the sauce, it just dosnt lok right, it reminds me of gone off milk where it just about to turn solid!
A basic bechamel sauce is so easy to make and cheaper
whats your recipe for one poodi?
Dont have a recipe as such just put a large knob of butter in a pan add plain flour till it binds together cook out for a few minutes then add hot milk whisking away till its of a desired thickness then season to taste and add some fresh or ground nutmeg
It certainly sounds like it's a bit iffy Whitebears!! I always make a cheese sauce when I make lasagne, but I LOVE cheese sauce and lasagne with a bechamel sauce just doesn't taste right to me. If you do make it again, buy a packet of basic cheese sauce mix and use that instead, unless you want to make it from scratch. Or if you don't like cheese sauce buy a white sauce packet :o)
I learnt that stretching the roux before adding the milk should thicken it up without causing lumps. Just keep stirring the roux over a low heat for a few mins then start to add the milk.

Thanks, i feel really ill :-S ive just asked my housemate and he said that jar didnt look right either, and smells funny too............. :-( wasted lasagne ....
I don't know what kind of ASDA sausce it was, but a good guide is to use your nose, if it looks bad and smells bad, it probably IS bad!
