Why the 'English ' in English Muffins?

I believe the phrase was coined so the Yanks could tell the difference between their muffins and ours.
In the UK we just call them Muffins.
In the USA they call them English Muffins,but what you often get there are what we call Crumpets!
American Muffins are like the ones we get here,small sponge cakes in a paper case.
English muffins are like a bread roll , USA ones are sweet cake .
Toasted muffins with butter and marmite , lovely !!!
Don't know about English but I like muffin
