When this question was asked before here on AnswerBank, I suggested it might actually be a mis-spelling of 'hulans'. 'Hulan' is an alternative version of 'uhlan', which means a Polish lancer. Could the pub name, therefore, be 'The Three Lancers' along much the same lines as 'The Three Musketeers'?
Why not phone the pub and ask the landlord?
