cooking fresh corn on the cob

i love frozen corn cobs, but whenever i try to cook fresh ones they seem to take ages to soften.
Just bought loads cheap from lidl.
how would you cook them?

Simplest is boiling gently for about 12 -15 minutes in unsalted water.
I steam ours, about the same time.
Try steaming, it takes about 15-20 minutes but the results are good, plus you can test a sample along the way.
I boil in salted water for about ten to fifteen minutes. Sometimes I roast them on an open flame. It's delicious.
Funny, we steam all our veg except corn on cob - but I'll try steaming it tomorrow. Ta!

boil till easy to poke, remove and brown under grill. Serve with oooodles of butter & black pepper.
smear some butter on them, grind black pepper, wrap in foil then pop on the BBQ for 10 mins - delicious!
5 minutes or so in a microwave, depending on size and number - put on a plate, add a tablespoon of water and cover.
It's a good idea to check for tenderness before buying.........press a kernel. If it spurts juice-it will most likely be tender and sweet when simmered gently for 10 minutes or so.
Might take a little longer (defeating the aim of your question) but the tastiest way is to get the corn with the husks on. Place them (husks and all) in ice cold water for about 15 minutes, then strip the husks back without ripping them off. Remove the 'silks' completely, then butter the entire cob with softened butter, salt and pepper lightly and then tie the husks back up to their original position. Tie at the top with some butchers string and pop onto a thoroughly medium hot barbecue grill for about 15 minutes, turning every 3 to 5 minutes.. the husks might scortch a little as will some of the corn, but that just adds to the flavor...

crisgal...Everyone has told you how to cook the cobs so the only thing I can add is to say that I would put butter and some ground black pepper on them before serving; there should be enough salt in the butter to make them taste really great.

Wrap in greasproof paper and cook in a microwave for about 3 mins or so, depending on size, leave to stand for a couple of minutes, and enjoy!

well, i stemed them in my pressure cooker, and they were hard. So i put them back in and they were crunchy. So i put them back in and they were edible but very firm 9kinda al dente).
i think it's me :(
Crisgal, perhaps the corns you bought were dried or almost there. From the description of your cooking experience with them it sure sounds like the corns were dried.
Corn on the cob is always crunchy compared with frozen..
I think society is right.

Perhaps Lidl knew it and were selling them off cheaply.
I know of corn quite well; I grow them and eat them raw, boiled, roasted, grilled, make corn meal etc.
