aldi - how do they do it??

just come back from a trip to aldi. spent £20.83 and got a huge trolley load of fruit and veg. the only other things i bought were 2 large fresh milk, 28 items in all. i really don't know how they manage to sell such good quality fruit and veg at such cheap prices. i'm always amazed at how little the bill comes to when i go there but today i am exceptionally amazed!! and exceptionally pleased :)

i find you have to use there fruit and veg very quickly,doesnt stay fresh very long.

Yes I agree with kate, it's very cheap but you have to use it up quickly

Generally, I find their fruit and veg outlasts that sold by the 'big 3'.

i use aldi regularly andi have no problem with how long their fruit and veg lasts, i find it the same as the major supermarkets and buy most of my fresh veg there. and a lot of the veg is local to whichever aldi you use too, delivered fresh each morning. it always surprises me how little it costs but today was even more surprising. i turned my nose up at aldi for a long time but have to say i'm now a complete convert.

Ethandron, I am now doing more and more shopping at Lidls and less and less and Morrisons. I have no problems with the quality and my purse is feeling the benefit. Like Aldi their veg is local and good and some of their other stuff is superior. I also am buying a lot of their german branded household cleaners, bleach, dishwasher tablets, and their face creams are amazing.

I can't compare with Aldi because we don't have an Aldi anywhere near, but I believe they are very similar.

The inhabitants of Aylesbury have it on a plate - two big Tesco, one Morrisons, one Sainsbury and they have an Aldi and Lidl opposite each other. The town's not that big,either!

I love aldis continental deli meats great selection.....and as lottie says the face creams are absolutely excellent... the cat won't touch their cat food though...

My cat wont eat anything other than Aldi....I went in today and bought 3 stainless steel saucepans for £7.99 each...Brilliant quality, I love Aldi.

I find aldi similarly priced to asda. I have all of the big names literally a stones throw from my house, I just tart around all of them ;)

Child/3rd world slave labour?

How does third world slave labour affect Aldi or Lidls more than the other High Street names.? I buy German foods and greengrocery, plus a lot of' manufactured in Germany goods' and free trade chocolate. I don't understand your answer on this Answerprancer. The quality in Aldi and Lidls is often better than other shops and sometimes not as good, swings and roundabouts. You don't get all the frills, just very plain shops. Ours in fact is very pleasant with wide aisles, no pushing or shoving, no shelf fillers blocking the aisles and is immaculately clean and tidy. And what is heavenly is no piped music.

Have to agree about the piped music LL,there is nothing more annoying than pushing your trolley around a supermarket and finding yourself uncontrollably walking in step to the bloody music.What is that about??

LL, if ALDI's products are made without 3rd world/child labour and all manufactured in Germany then I stand corrected and retract what I said.

Not all manufactured in Germany answerprancer. Lots of foreign food from other countries as well. They probably do stock some stuff from 3rd world countries, but no more than any other supermarkets. Lots of the items of clothing, bedlinen and household/garden goods are German made and are of better quality than in other shops. German goods are generally of higher quality than ours.

I am not questioning German products, if ALDI's stuff was *all* produced in Germany I would shut up, but he question was "how do they do it" and my answer in terms of cheapness was "child/3rd world slave labour" and it still stands afaic.
