Are own brands good value ?

I don't usually use Asda but I decided to give them a try for my monthly grocery order and have it delivered.

It was delivered 2½ hours late at 10.30pm instead of between the 6 and 8 pm slot.
When it arrived only one bottle of liquor was included ( I had ordered 4 ) and there was no paperwork to find out why or to check off the order.

My other observation concerning their goods which prompted my question was the quality of their own brand ' cod fillets in batter. ' . A better description would be batter fillets with a taste of cod. They were 80% batter and 20% of something which may have been fish.

I've used Asda for home delivery. they're no better or worse than Tesco, except they use a million plastic bags!

I'd be very wary of the "value" range in any supermarket, if you're fussy about what you eat.

I assume you've complained to Asda?

We get a fair amount of 'value' products donated at work....and what you see immediately is that there is a lot LESS of what you want in the tin. They are really a false economy in the long run.

People who refuse to buy 'value range' products should check them out more thoroughly

For example, 'value range' carrots tend to be just as good as the 'normal range' ones, it's just that they are not all a neat uniform EU rules size and shape - plus you get more product for less money

People just see the word 'value' and instantly the snob inside them appears and says "Ooooh, I couldn't possibly buy that"

I use Tesco home delivery and have never had a complaint from them in the 2 years ive used them. I also pretty much use all their Tesco Value range too (everything in the cupboard in nicely co-ordinated!) and again, have had no complaint with that aspect either.

Pastafreak don't get me started on the value range or own brands fish/ocean pie it literally is 99% of low quality mash with 1% fish, they should rename it "mash potato with less then a fish finger worth of fish in it pie"

Like I've said, ive never had any complaints using value ranges.

I'm on an extremely tight budget, and quite frankly, needs must. I can't afford to be fussy.

Butch i don't know where you got that idea from as I bought own brand fishfingers a few times and they were lifeless and limp and almost fish free, they couldn't hold a candle to the much superior birdseye fishfinger.

I bought a Youngs fish pie a while back...there was nothing but potato in it...I DO like potato-but it should have been called potato pie. ;-(
I don't 'do' ready meals too often,but I can say that even M&S do not impress me.

I have no problem with value fresh fruit and veg...meat is likely to be fattier......but anything thats precessed within an inch of it's life is no-go.

I should say that value tinned tomatoes are fine...and I'd always use them.
I think you just need to pick and choose.

We only ever go to Asda for particular things, e.g. special wine offers (generally Champagne).After an experience with their meat, I would never buy it again if you paid me to buy it! I got my money back on it, thankfully, but would certainly not buy any meat from there ever again. Waitrose "essentials" goods are usually very good ....

Years ago all my shopping consisted of value products from Tesco That was the time when I was skint. The only things I wouldn't recommend in the value range are the toilet rolls which are next to useless and washing up liquid which you have to use half the bottle to get any suds. Oh and the washing powder is pretty grim as well. The bread, marg, eggs, cheese etc. are all perfectly good, however these days I prefer to buy free range eggs for ethical reasons.

To answer your answers : It is delivered from Slough and when I rang them up they said they had only sent one bottle as that is all they had. They also said they would only charge for one and would send me a copy of the delivery note..
They have never sent sent it . I emailed them expressing my concerns , but received no reply. I have sent them a letter but again no answer.
I have used Sainsbury's delivery before and have found them generally pretty good.

With regards to the so called ' cod in batter ' I have just defrosted and done a forensic on their ' haddock in batter ' . The batter was 2½ mm thick all around .
I compared their uncooked weights and they were equal i.e the weight of the batter was the same as the fish . By volume the batter was greater so when eating it there was little fish taste. I have now tested another one and the weight of the batter was far greater than the fish . So its fish and chips for lunch today or should I say batter
and chips .

waitrose do a price check with tesco on a lot of things. Also Ocado home delivery (waitrose stuff) don't let you order anything that's not in stock, as it comes from a warehouse rather than a shop and they know what they have there. they also do timeslots on the 1/2 hour and text you to let you know which van is coming and what the drivers name is so you can ask them before you let them in. They also do "green" delivery slots so that if someone nearby is having a delivery, you can pick the same time to save petrol. Ocado also have their own brands of things which are pretty comparable in price to other shops and are nice
