Are own brands good value ?

I don't usually use Asda but I decided to give them a try for my monthly grocery order and have it delivered.

It was delivered 2½ hours late at 10.30pm instead of between the 6 and 8 pm slot.
When it arrived only one bottle of liquor was included ( I had ordered 4 ) and there was no paperwork to find out why or to check off the order.

My other observation concerning their goods which prompted my question was the quality of their own brand ' cod fillets in batter. ' . A better description would be batter fillets with a taste of cod. They were 80% batter and 20% of something which may have been fish.

I;m not against own brand as such - I've been told for instance that many own brand cereals are made by the big manufacturers like Kellogg's, just sold as Tesco's own etc - but I have found Value items poor value. It may have been my luck of the draw in what I bought, but I won't risk it again.

i think if you chose the right things, value brands can be ok. For example, 10p shower gel from tesco is (in my opinion) just as good as say, sanex, which costs 30 times more. It has mainly the same ingredients in. Value mince is just as good, because although higher in fat, you simply brown and then drain the fat off, leaving it with the same amount of fat as the more expensive ones. i also use the value bog roll because although you may need to use more, it's £1.20 for 12 rolls, so in my opinion good value compared to others ie andrex. Also things that are going in other things (like for example kidney beans) you cant taste any difference anyway!

Ordering on line? Im not sure about with food,we like to give it the once over before buying,but it has a place for the infirm and the very busy.When i was younger there were all sorts of small traders who drive round in walk in vans,so have we really progressed.

Never tried Asda stuff but Tesco are good :)

I've used both sprinter...and while I don't mind the value ones,I much prefer Andrex,as it's kinder to my skin...and really lasts for ages. But then-it's just for me-so I needn't worry about someone using masses of it...except when my daughter comes to visit. ;-)
