My favorite is Indian Pale Ale (IPA).

For bottles it's Becks, for draught it's Grolsch.

Good question Donegal, this could be a long thread. There is no one best beer as it's down to personal taste, but for me its either Stella or Michelob Gold. Or real ale and bitter such as Adnams, Directors,Spitfire and maybe the occasional Guinness.

With a Jack Daniels chaser or two or three. Oh bu**er it just give me the bottle.

the best one is always the one you are currently drinking
For me it's Guinness.  I never get hangover's from it.  No headaches, no dodgy tummies, nothing.  The worst I feel after a session is tired...

For me it's John Smith's and Guiness - and I agree with Haggisdj about the no hangover thing.

I also like Fosters too, but that's Lager. .....I could just have a drink now.....

It's officially 'owd roger'. And there is no discussion about that. It's an absolute, proven fact, and no one has a right to dispute it.
Except today, maybe, when I happen to be drinking this rather nice 'Chimay'. Yum.
The first one on a Friday tea-time, best pint of the week.
Donegal, what's your opinion ?
Or Carlsberg Export.  Or Kronenbourg.  Or any cold and fizzy lager after work (especially, as Chillum says, the first Friday pint)
  • Sainsburys Diat Pils
  • Timothy Taylors Landlord (in cask & bottle)

As per my husband.

Best lager I've ever had is either Labatts (in Canada) or Oranjeboom (in Breda, Netherlands, where the brewery is)

Guinness is great.

Best real ale...probably Davy's Old Wallop. Served in their own bars in London (i've only been to Champagne Charlies) out of metal jugs. www.davy.co.uk

A lot of people are suggesting lagers, not beers, so I'm a little confused. My favourite beer is John Smith's. And while I'm being pedantic, newtron, it's India Pale Ale (not Indian...)

So donegal - was it just beer or lager too?
Jeeez, you really are picky.  How many people say they'll 'have a beer' when we know they mean lager?  Flippetyflop.
Smudge, your husband has great taste. I can't judge Sainsbury's Dit Pils, but Timothy Taylor's Landlord is indeed an excellent beer.
And I wouldn't say no to a pint of Abbot right now, either.

natalie_1982 - I, and everyone I go drinking with, always say "beer" if we mean "beer" and "lager" if we mean "lager". If someone asks me to buy them a beer, I'll get them a beer and if they ask for a lager, that's what they'll get.

Put your handbag away indiesinger!  Maybe it's just people around my area that refer to lager as beer, only the posts above seem to refer to lager as beer too.  I'm sorry, I didn't mean to sound uppity I was making light of the fact!

I worked as Relief/Assistant Manager for Greene King for two years I can tell the difference between lager and beer, and I thought it was quite common for people to refer to lager as beer.

In Eastenders Billy Mitchell and Martin Fowler ask for beer and they get bottled lager.  If it's on the telly it must be true!!  ;o)

Ringwood Old Thumper,John Smith's Magnet , Fosters Lager. Exmore Gold.
I'd say the answer to this question is any one of the mere handful of beers which are regularly chosen as tops at Beerfests - for real ales - around the country. Smudge has already mentioned Timothy Taylor's 'Landlord' and there is also Caledonian Deuchar's 'IPA' and Oakham 'JHB'' which fit that pattern. Knowledgeable beer-drinkers have already spoken...these are, quite simply, "the best"!
