Fibonacci thanks ill have a look there ...great xxx
Right Tink, I've found it.....

You need -
6oz butter
Grated rind of 1 lemon
Pinch of ground cinnamon
1/2 lb caster sugar
4 eggs
10 oz plain flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
2 1/2 fl.oz milk
4 slices candied peel

1. Grease a 8in cake tin with butter or lard
2. Set the oven to gas 4 / 180C
3. Cream the butter and slowly beat in the lemon, cinnamon and sugar, until light and fluffy.
4. Beat in the eggs one at a time, adding a little flour as you go, to prevent curdling.
5. Sift (I love that word) the remaining flour with the baking powder. Fold in with a metal spoon.
6. Add enough milk to bring the mixture to dropping consistency (it'll drop off a spoon rather that run)
7. Spoon the mixture into the cake tin and even out with a palette knife.
8. Bake for 1 1/2 hours, turning the temperature down to gas 3 / 165C after 45 mnutes.
9. Let cool for 10 minutes, then gently ease out onto a wire rack. Decorate with peel.

And that's all there is to it.....
Let me know if you try it.

Bob thats so kind sharing your recipie ill be sure to let you know- ill have to get a few practice runs in before christmas ;o>

Thanks so much x
remember, it's a secret recipe, so don't post it on the internet or anything..... ;-)

I always loved being in my grandma's kitchen when I was a little lad,
this brings back some really good memories.....
I might have to make some myself tomorrow...xxx
Bob have you baked this in a traybake tin?
You can easily add lots of things to that basic recipe, to make lots of different cakes. For instance dessicated coconut is lovely, and a handful od carraway seeds is simply heavenly.

Why does no baker or supermarket sell Seed Cake anymore ?

Mystery to me because its so tasty !
Hi Mrsmurphey,
I usually make it in small bread tins, or circular cake tins....
