No bakers around this morning?
Perhaps they haven't "risen" yet.

Doh .... Canary! ;)
Hi Anne - I too have been looking at your post hoping some bakers are around.

Do you happen to know if the scone mix that you get from supermarkets is any good.
This is the Be Ro recipe I use:
6 oz S R Flour
Pinch salt and pepper
1 Tsp mustard powder
1 oz margarine
3 oz cheese grated
2 Tablespoons milk

Heat oven to 220 C Grease baking tray
Mix flour and seasonings, rub in marg. Stir in cheese reserving a little for the top
Mix to soft dough with egg and milk reserving a little for glazing
Ross out to a round (1/2" thick) and cut into 8 triangles.
Brush with egg and milk and sprinkle with cheese. Bake for about 10/15 mins until golden brown.

I sometimes use a scone cutter. I also reduce the time as I have a fan assisted oven or take the temperature down to 190.
Ooops - add 1 egg to above recipe!
Hi Maggiebee,
I use this recipe all the time and alternate between triangles and a scone cutter. Touch wood I have always been successful. The only problem is, it takes more time to make them than eat them so have to double up on the recipe.
Anne just letting you know that scones from Lidl are simply divine ie if you live near one.

Thanks all for your suggestions, I used the BERO recipe Maggie last time I made some and for some reason they didn't rise very much. I have come to the conclusion that it's my oven, it's a (foreign) Gorenje model, there are far too many settings on it and the instruction book is totally incomprehensible!

I won't give in though, I will try another batch using your recipe maggie and if they don't work I may just visit Lidl (thanks for that tip jenny!)
When I make scones I use natural yogurt with just a little milk, rather than all milk. This makes the scones really light and airy and may well work with cheese scones . Worth a try.
Ann, perhaps if you use the BE -RO recipe you could try and add 1 teaspoon of baking powder this should help make your scones rise. Even better, roll out your scone mix to 1" thick instead of half an inch.
