Brown Pea soup
6 Answers
Has anyone out there got a recipe for 'brown pea soup'? My Mother was a Yorkshire lady and she used to make this soup in the winter sometimes. The only thing I remember about it was that it involved a ham bone for the stock. I have a supply of brown (carlin) peas and now just need a recipe!!! Many thanks.

I would soak the peas for a couple of hours to soften. If the ham bone is raw , cover with water, bring to the boil and throw away the water, this will remove any excess salt. Replace the water and add the peas, chopped onion, diced carrots and diced celery. , pepper, a couple of crushed bay leaves and a couple of tablespoons of tomato puree. Bring to the boil and simmer to cook. Once the ham is cooked remove from the pan, cut the meat from the bone and return this to the pan. It may be necessary to top the water up during cooking if it gets too low Check the seasonings and adjust to taste. Serve with chunks of bread and enjoy! Hope this is of help
