My Laptop Is Poorly ...
10 Answers
My Laptop is on a go-slow and I am starting to get annoyed with it. Can anyone help?
When I open a new Tab, change websites and try to type something it is unbearably slow. Sometimes I have typed a paragraph and when I look at the screen only one line is showing and the rest appears in its own sweet time. When I try and get it out of Sleep mode it takes a few thumps on the mouse or keyboard before the password box appears.
I have Windows 10, using Firefox but often use Edge. I get Virgin via cable. Laptop is about three years old and is a Lenovo/Lenova.
I have:
. Switched it off then back on
. Cleaned the cache
. Thumped it
. Unplugged the router/modem
Any idea of why it is very slow? Can I fix it? Can I blame either of my furry family?

Have a general declutter, removing any programs you no longer use or need. You can always re-install them again when you find a need for them. Ample space on your Hard drive?

That reads as if something is hogging all of your laptop's resources. The most common cause is anti-virus software getting itself stuck in a loop. (Microsoft's own products, such as Windows Defender, are notorious for it but I've known other programs, such as AVG and Norton, to exhibit the same problem). The solution is to uninstall your anti-virus program and then to reinstall it (or, possibly better, to install something else).
It could also be worth running Malwarebytes Anti-Malware if you've already got it installed. If not, install and run AdwCleaner instead. (It's from the same company. It's got a more basic interface but it avoids getting involved in a trial of 'premium' product:

ivor - I will leave your suggestion until last. Once upon a time I accidentally uninstalled an operating system and I was a little bit upset. 1999, day one of my first PC.
SA - I know what it says but I don't know what it means.

Fender - I may try that next.
Crazy Cat Man - I downloaded that thing and it did something to my computer and it is noticeably faster. I was having problems scrolling before but it seems okay. I will see how it goes this week before considering some other fix.
I set up MS Edge but I didn't like it very much. I hope that whatever is happening won't happen any more.

I've just looked at your images files. Firefox is draining your resources!
The problem probably lies with a dodgy extension. Restart Firefox in Safe Mode:
Hamburger (3 lines, top right) > Help (Question mark, at the bottom of the menu) > Restart with Add-ons Disabled.
If things then get better, gradually re-enable your extensions (Hamburger > Add-ons > Extensions) to find out which one is causing the problem.
