Can anyone tell me if by writing: __ IXCMXCV I am actually writing 9995 in Roman Numerals? I know that writing MMMMMMMMMCMXCV would work too, and that having the __ is not used anymore since most numbers in Roman Numerals are date....but would it still be accurate and correct?

Thanks for the link, but that was one of the places I learnt it from and doesn't really help clarify in how flexibly the __ can be used
have you tried Compvter Romanvs? if i understand it right, if you put a bar on X, then it is 10000, and since the rule is to put a lower number to substract it from the larger number, could it no be VX with a bar on the X? i could be completely wrong, of course
Sam172 - yes you are.

worder - no it couldn't. To write out numbers in Roman numerals you have to translate each digit individually, so 9995 has to be 9000 + 900 + 90 + 5, not 10000 - 1.

Interesting thoughts two thirds of the way down the page as to whether the Romans ever actually needed to record any Roman numerals over 3,999... https://www.unrv.com/culture/roman-numerals.php
