Elder scrolls IV oblivion help!

I just started out on this game and I'm having a few problems. I cant seem to kill anything but rats/wolves so i cant complete any of my quests because Im always killed first.
If anyone has any good tips to start off/get some experience it would be much appreciated as most of the FAQ's on the game sites are way to advanced for what i want at the mo.

All I can really suggest is turning the difficulty down to the lowest, it does have 100 settings just for that. Maybe picking a Fighter or Knight class is also a good idea for beginners as you get the benifits of more hit points and stamina.

try blocking. you probably need to work on your timing.

if your a caster ensure that you maintain your range and strafe to avoid incoming projectile attacks.
