hi, does anyone know if american ps2 games will work in the UK, because ive just got a game from america and when i put it in the ps2 it says please insert a ps1 or ps2 format disc, but it is. does anyone know if i can fix this or if i have to stick with it?

You need to get your PS2 chipped.
Google for it and you'll find plenty of info.

not possible, if u want to play ur game ur gona have to spend more money...u need a 'freeloader' easy to find on the net, i recomend eBay, this disk allows you to play import games. Or get ur ps chipped- a litle

American PS2's (and all other consoles) use NTSC(running at 60Hz) whilst Europe and Australisia use the PAL region (running at 50Hz)

It's all to do with analogue television systems. PAL currently has a greater resolution than NTSC, but there is a fusion between the 2 called 'PAL 60'.

So unless your console is chipped then there will never be a chance of you playing normal US games in the UK.
