Anyone know of a site where you can upload an old photograph of a business and it can tell you where the business was located? I'm talking round about 1940. Thanks.

if you are on facebook there are loads of local history groups
I often Google old businesses in my area for a local group. I just put in the name of the business and the town/city. Doesn't always work, but I've been quite lucky.

The thing is, we don't know where the photo was taken or the name of the business. All we know is it was a tobacconist shop possibly in Manchester or Salford. The sign above the door says Bullen 46 and the man and woman in the photograph were possibly called Mr and Mrs John Jackson. I wondered if there was perhaps a business directory online from that time or a website where you can upload a photo and it recognises it.
You could try scanning it in then using a free app like Tin Eye which allegedly searches every image on the web.
there must be a Kelly's for Manchester

Bullen is not common - and the most fame ancestor is - Anne Bullen or Boleyn
Question Author
CrapAtCryptics No results on Tin Eye unfortunately.
Peter, what is Kelly's for Manchester?
I think PP means a trade directory but they stopped those around 1910.
Question Author
bookbinder, that seems to be for sculptures.
You could put it on here and see if anyone can suggest something to help you.
Question Author
I don't think I can do that JTH as the picture doesn't belong to me and I don't know if you can show photos with people on them without getting permission from the owner.
Question Author
The clues up to now are; a photograph taken about 1940 of a couple standing in the doorway of a tobacconist shop whose names were possibly Mr and Mrs John Jackson. This was in Manchester or Salford. Above the door it says Bullen 46.
This might help.......somewhere.....

My apologies for the sculptures. I did google Kelly's Trade Directory, honestly! I have just googled 'Salford archives photos' and some old photos of Salford appeared. There might be something there.
Question Author
Sorry JTH I couldn't see anything there. CrapAtCryptics said try Tin Eye but it didn't recognise it, but I think there might be other websites where you can download a picture and it might be recognised.
Could you give approx age for Mr John Jackson. I have one aged about 19years in 1940. Born in Manchester, Died 2008 aged 87
You could try going at it from another angle. You could try tracing Mr and Mrs John Jackson on the 1939 register. I do not know how much you know about them, but it may well be possible to narrow it down that way.

(the 1939 Register was a census, it is available on Find My Past and Ancestry).

It may also be worth doing a search on trade directories. You could also try going onto the websites of Manchester Record Office and Salford Record Office and see if there are any online sources you can look at, or even search.
Question Author
ok bookbinder I'll take a look, but I think it could be Manchester rather than Salford. There was a poster outside the shop advertising a film being shown at the Odean, Manchester, and although they could still advertise that in Salford, Salford would have had it's own picture houses where it would probably be showing the same film. I might see if I can find photos in the archives of Manchester. Thanks for your help everyone.
any idea what Mrs Jackson's first name was? It would help finding them in censuses.
