well they are only �7 each from the local register office and they do give you a wealth of information. Scottish ones are a little dearer but their content is far superior to English ones htough.

It is essential to do proper research first to be sure you are obtaining the correct certificate, then it is never a waste of money and you are always able to verify and authenticate your findings.

If you are talking about English ones, then no, you can't view them on a website anywhere you will have to pay the �7.

Scottish ones (for certain time periods) can be viewed on Scotlands People website but you still have to pay.

what is worth remembering is that once you have the information from the certified copies of the register entries, the sources you will need to use then are free to use in most cases, and so the iniyial outlay is minimal compared to the leap back it gives you.

If you decide to buy a cert online do make sure you are on the official ONS site @ �7 and not a parasite which will charge �23.
Once you have a name and address you may want to subscribe to ancesttry .com for a free*month* 0800 731 6679.
You will have to give your CC details but they give you a number to phone io cancel before the month is up.
Judicious use of the census information in ancestry. com, alliied with birfhs, marriages and deaths info from the free.bmd website could enable you to make some reasonable progreess backwards in time.
However, ancestry ,com transcripts, (which come from The Natrional Archives) contain far too many luducrous and incompetent mistranscriptions - shame on them.
So beware, and please take nothing as true until it has been properly verified.

Why do you say that Scottish BMDs are more expensive?

On www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk (the official website) you can search online for any BMD since 1855. It costs �6 for 30 credits. It costs one credit to view the index and another 5 credits to view the certificate/census entry....so its possible to obtain 5 certificates for �6.

You're right about the Scottish certs being far superior to English ones!
