I am trying to find more info on my husband grandfather Albert james Barr, when he married in 1930 he was 42, but I cannot find him on any cencus as that would make him being born in 1888? He was a fisherman and possible at somepoint lived in Birmingham and in Boston.
Any information or advice where to look would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

There is an Albert Barr born in Q4 of 1889 in Birmingham on ancestry .... the only Albert James Barr was born in 1886 in Nottingham, so as you mention Birmingham, I should say he is the first one .. it's not uncommon for middle names to change or be missing or added later......... And this same Albert Barr shows on the 1891 census as born about 1890 (if he was born in Dec 1889 he may not have been registered until Jan 1890) he is with his parents Emma L and Stewart R and several siblings at number 6 House, 56 Hatchett Street, St Stephens, Birmingham. The address would suggest it's a "court" or back to back house, and Hatchett Street still exists (just off A4540 in the Summerhill area of Birmingham)
On the 1901 census he is 11 and living with same named parents in Lozells, Birmingham, again with several siblings, his father is still a gun action filer and was born in Woolwich (listed then as Kent) and their address is 14 court, Guildford Street, Aston Manor, Lozells.....

Hope this helps

Which website do you use echo & is it very expensive to subscribe to?
This was all from www.ancestry.co.uk Smudge .... I think it's about 10 a month but I paid for the year in one go as was cheaper .... has helped me find 3200+ relatives either by seraching on there direct or by finding enough information for me to them find others who are researching the same names so it's been worth it for me .... some sites offer a facility whereby you can buy credits - I have no experience of this but would guess that it would work out more expensive as it's very addictive and you can spend hours at it.... have you started a tree?
Hi echo - thank you very much for the info.

I started a family tree quite some time back & as my friend subscribes annually to the same website as you, I've managed, via her, to go back to the early1800's on my Dad's side - so far!

You're right, it's so addictive & is amazing what it throws up! I've decided to subscribe annually to the same website so I don't have to bother my friend, although she doesn't mind at all.

I've got quite a few birth, marriage & death certificates now, so look forward to watching my family tree grow even more!

Thanks again & if you have any further hints or clues on searching, I'd be very grateful.....
At my local library I can get free access to ancestry.com
How aboiut yours?
I can get free access at the library ... I just don't get time to get to the library!!!

Another tip - try looking at www.tribalpages.co.uk as they have a great on line webtree you can use for free or upgrade if you need more space - fab for sharing worldwide with ease

Thank you for that Segilla & echo.

Didn't realise the library might offer the use of 'ancestry' for free - must ask our local one tomorrow.

Although, there's no place like home for comfort & ease when looking up records.
