Death registration

If someone died say in Richmond N. Yorkshire could their death be registered in Durham Western. This person possibly lived in the Durham area but died in a home in Richmond. Or does your death have to be registered in the place of death?

By law a death has to be registered in the Registration District where it occurred

Hi craft. I hope you can bear with me as I explain! I'm looking for a certain William Longstaff who was born around 1910 and who died in early 1980s, during his working life he lived in the Leyburn (N. Yorkshire)area. I know his wife died 6 months before he did and she was in a home in Richmond N. Yorkshire.
I have found a Joseph William Longstaff who was born in 1911 and who died in Sep.1994 so he would tally and have found that a Joseph William Longstaff married somebody called Christian in 1934. On looking through deaths of Longstaffs in 1994 there is an Olive Longstaff who died 6 months before this Joseph William Longstaff (February 1994). On looking up an Olive Christian there is one who was born in 1912. All this seems to be aiming at what I'm looking for. The only problem I have is that all these registrations are in Durham Western and this lady was in a home in Richmond so I presume that is where she died.
I have been told that these two deaths were in the local press but archives don't go far enough back for me to look into it.
If you can help I'd be very grateful.

What set in stone facts do you have about William and his wife...........do you know his parents names, or his childrens?

actually alot of the Richmond sub districts were transferred to the Durham South Western Distict in 1974.

Hi craft, thanks for your help. I'll have to find out when Annie Longstaff died then and see if was in Richmond area 6 months before her husband.
Unfortunately, I don't have any set in stone facts about him or his wife. I know he worked in the Leyburn area, that his father owned one of the Feldom farms in the late 20s, he had 3 sons and had a cattle transport business. In 1929 he'll have been about 18 and he was very tall. Not much to go on I know.

Can you tell me how you found out her Christian name? I only get a surname in marriages with ancestry.co.uk. Di can't find an Annie Christian in births who might correspond to someone living in Durham area so any help there would be appreciated.

I got the christian name from ancestry as normal..........

btw I checked for children for Joseph William and Annie, and could only find a boy and a girl, Danny in 1935 and Eileen in 1939 so it doesn't look as if this was your couple.

Thank you craft for all your time spent on this. He is part of the family tree as he was my mother's father who she never met (she is now deceased), the information we have is just what a member of the family told her before having a stroke so couldn't tell anymore. If only there was a way of getting access to the local papers of that time as we know the death was in them. Probably better to let sleeping dogs lie as they say..... Thanks again.

craft, a question. How did you find out what children they had?

the search option of the later index up to 2005 allows you to put in a father and mothers surname and children registered anywhere in england or wales with that combination are listed, then you just eliminate or include by checking RD districts, dates etc.

It's a bit long-winded but didn't take that long. I put just the surname Longstaff in the births in Ancestry, and between 1935 and 1945, in Yorkshire. It then brings up all names of children born in those years in christian name order and the district they were registered in. If you hold your cursor over the left hand side of the entry, rather than click on it, it shows you the mother's maiden name.
If you enter the mother's maiden name into the search part, and the system is working correctly (sometimes it doesn't) it brings all their children's names up to the top.
