I would love to find out some details of my maternal Gt Grandad if possible. All I know is that his name was J.J. Hogan, he was born in Ireland, possibly Limerick or Clonmel and that he was a jockey. I have heard over the years that he was reasonably successful and may have won an Irish Grand National (if there even is such a thing). Although it could all just be hear say. Any idea where I could start?
i think so its not something i have tried myself but my brother has looking for our family tree some sites are free others you have to pay so its worth looking at the different sites on offer ;) good luck x
Findmypast.com and ancestry.com both have the censuses. There are others, but I don't know how good they are.
Best place to start is with what you know. Start with your mother and when she was born and details of her parents. Take it back a generation at a time until you come to Hogan. Once you have details of your maternal grandmother or grandfather, that should lead to your great grandad's marriage cert. That should give an age and thus you can work out when he was born.
Here's a bit on the Irish Grand National:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irish_G
rand_National.
The focus is very much on the horse.
Then there is this site: http://www.tbheritage...ishGrandNational.html which at least mentions all the winning horses since 1870 and their owners. Looks like the jockey doesn't get a mention. But it's another line of enquiry.
