Oh by the way Michael Henchard was Mayor of Casterbridge
Thomas Hardy
It is quite a good read - not much fun - he starves himself to death in the end

He sells his wife in Chap 1
and there is quite a lot in between.
it is one of those novels that relies alot on coincidence, abit like jane Eyre
not much fun, Peter? That's putting it mildly. Hardy is not Mr Laugh-a-minute. No relation to Oliver Hardy. He was very highly regarded at the start of the last century, though. It is said that when he died they removed his heart to have it buried in Westminster Abbey but the cat got it. That may be an urban myth, however.
...aww I love the Mayor of Casterbridge, none of this mushy Mr. Darcy-esqueness nonsence, plus it's quite short , which is a bonus....
The cat wot got his heart...

was it that black and white bυgger - Jess of the d'Urbervilles?
no it was more obscure than that lol
