Easy I suppose to dismiss the implications of his decision. I have just watched an interpretation of their story. Leaves me wanting to know more, I will have to read up on them both! http://www.youtube.co...st=PL20BAB523C641D64D
I heard a version on the radio a few weeks back - it gave me better insight into the fact that he gave up the throne for love, rather than setting his lover aside. He's been called selfish and unpatriotic, but nowadays it probably wouldn't seem so awful. Princess Margaret couldn't marry Townsend as he was a divorcé, but Charles has married Camilla. Times change.
I was watching a programme about Royal Weddings last week - it said that Edward only seem to be attracted to married women and only dated married women. He was a bit of a playboy and went against tradition and what was expected of him.
Even if he had not met Mrs. Simpson, I think he would not have married to fit in with what was tradition.
it was Noel Coward who suggested that a statue of Wallis Simpson be erected in every town in England as a token of gratitude for having saved Britain from Edward VIII. Caustic and witty, yes, but some truth in there.
Princess Margaret Could have married Peter Townsend if she agreed to give up her HRH title, but that was too much for her. I always thought she loved her royal status more than him.
A love story of sorts, but he must have known that Wallace Simpson would not be acceptable as Queen consort. This was 1937 she was a divorced commoner and American at that, and unable to bear children (no heir to the throne). At least Edward was counselled wisely and he gave up the throne honestly. Not like Charles who is selfish and greedy having is cake and still wanting more, he's got away with it, having his heir and spare and then marrying his concubine.
