What is the furthest back anyone has traced their family tree?

Obviously, the Royals can trace theirs back centuries, but what about non-aristocratic people?

Mine traces back (one branch does) to early 1700's and an American blackguard named Benjamin Thompson who somehow got to be dubbed "the Earl of Rumsford." They say he was a traitor to the Cause, among other bad things, but also a scientist. How good are the ancestral records kept in Ireland and Scotland, do any of you know?
