Colonel H. Jones was killed in the Falklands battle but the rest of his team won it.

I would imagine there are a lot throughout history.

Plenty. But the one that immediately sprang to my mind was General Wolfe, in 1759 at the Battle of the "Plains of Abraham" outside the walls of Quebec city. This victory effectively lost France their North American holding to Britain.

El Cid?

The guy who died of cholera during the Battle of Alma?

Aimable someone or the other - it depends on whether youthink we (and the French) won the battle.

PP

The British commander at the Alma was Lord Raglan. The battle was certainly won by the British and French, but Raglan didn't die until about 8 months later.
How about General Sir Isaac Brock? Died at Queenston Heights, but the victory over the Americans during the War of 1812 was still his.
