Robert Burns, Scottish poet (1759-1796). A self-educated crofter / peasant, he is hailed as a champion for the rights of the common people.  His birthday (23 January) is celebrated in Scotland every year at 'Burns Suppers', during which haggis is eaten, whisky drank, kilts worn and songs sung.
