I visited French and Belgian cemetries at the weekend and noticed that some of the inscriptions included the words 'served as' which I'm guessing means one of the soldier's names would be an alias.
Can anyone tell me why this would be. Thanks

Perhaps they had to use an older person's name as they were under age themselves to take the shilling.
