I hardly knew my dad, when i did see him he talked of me and i didnt get to know him. I was told he served in the navy when I was younger. Since he died I have found a photo of him in uniform, but my research shows it to be horse guards (life guards). I have been told he served in Cyprus in the 50's and got a medal. I have searched military record site but can't find him. Does anyone have any ideas please

Probably not worth moving now but may have been better in history/genealogy. enthusiasts there may know the best course of action.

I take it you have searched the normal genealogy sites, such as Ancestry ?
Military records that recent are not available online. You can send off for his service records but there may be a fee: https://www.gov.uk/requests-for-personal-data-and-service-records
