I was born in Ancoats, a suburb of Manchester that borders the City centre. I definitely know and remember Manchester of old. We spent our first wedding night in the Midland Hotel. A surreal experience as I offered to buy a celebration drink to all those in the lounge but the waiter advised against it as they were on a convention from AA! Also, we had to stay an...

some of those pictures look a lot older than 1985. Were Oxford bags (trousers) still popular in Manchester in 1985? I remember wearing then in the early seventies
Oxford bags definitely worn in the 70s, my brothers wore them. Not sure about 80s Retro, can't remember.
I seem to remember a place called Roxys
Anyone else remember that?
Roxys? Not the Roxy room in Pips Ric? Where was it situated?
Retro, the van is an 'R' reg which was 76 to 77. It doesn't look new so I would say very early 80s.
The only other Roxy I knew was the cinema Hollinwood.
Looking at the clothes, cars and other indicators I would say a lot of the pics were taken 1976-80
I also worked as head waiter at the small Rembrandt Hotel in canal street about the same time as it started to become a gay area.

Served Long John Baldry when he stayed there, and The Royal Ballet Company cast, who were all friends of the owner Reg ???????.

This is where the moors murderers met one of their victims in the bar downstairs.
I'm sure I saw Bryan Ferry at a place called Roxys in Manchester
Mind you this was the early '80's
I do remember going to The Hacienda way before it used to be too busy
I saw Robert Palmer there
-- answer removed --
I never got to go to the Hacienda sadly. Went to Henry's.
Was it the twisted Wheel where the Hollies started, I saw them a few times somewhere in Mancs.
Ah the Twisted Wheel , Brasenose Street,Northern Soul, great times.

Closed in 1971.
The Twisted wheel was a regular haunt of ours. One night we came out of there and went for a burger. A bit of a crowd were queing and my mate got chatting to one of the ladies of the night that were often around when things got quiet, they were soon getting on like a house on fire.
Next thing the pair of them started to head of behind the shops and he shouted .. Back in a bit, get me a burger.
So he has pulled and I'm left holding the burgers. Before you know it he has reappeared looking a bit flustered .. I said that was quick and she was a bit too tasty for you wasn't she ?

He said .. "It wasn't a she "
Anyone remember 'The Bodega' in Market Street, - basement bar and jazz venue. After our wedding at All Saints register office (11 am new year's eve '65) we all piled in there.
## 'The Bodega' in Market Street, ##

Was that like the Cellar Bar, bit like The Cavern, all brickwork and arches Khandro?
Yes, straight off the street and down the stairs, room to right was the bar and room to left where they had music - mostly trad jazz. Another Jazz venue at the time was The Clarendon upstairs- (strictly modern jazz) Oxford St on right before All Saints Square, it's all coming back now ! --- and the 'Salutation' in a back street off the square, we (art students) used to frequent that one (too much, I remember).
Trt, Mamya, if you frequented the 'Twisted Wheel' .... try getting hold of this very interesting book all about its history & who appeared there in its heyday. I bought four copies a long time ago for various people. The book is called 'Central 1179' by Keith Rylatt & Phil Scott. Here's a link ... http://www.amazon.co.uk/Central-1179-Story-Manchesters-Twisted/dp/0953662632
Hi Elina, I have browsed the book - my son in law has a copy. A bit pricey for me right now.
