Can anyone tell me why it's bad luck to open an unbrella indoors?

As with most superstitions, you are unlikely to find a definitive reason for the 'unlucky umbrella indoors' one. There are some who claim it dates back to a time of sun-worshipping in roofless temples. Clearly, if you raised your parasol, you were denying yourself the sun's blessing and fellow worshippers no doubt beat the living heck out of you...so now we don't do it!
Highly improbable, I know, but no less likely than any other theory you might be presented with here.

In truth, the superstition is probably coincidental. (Someone left their umbrella opened in the hall and had a terrible day--they told their friend to keep their umbrellas shut, and it spread.)

It isn't always bad luck to open an umbrella inside. According to some, it's only considered bad if any of the following apply:
-The umbrella was a gift.
-The umbrella is black.
-The umbrella has never been used outdoors.
-There is a sick person in the house.

Other bad luck umbrella superstitions:
-Never give an umbrella as a gift.
-Never pick up an umbrella you dropped (ask someone to do it for you).
-Never place your umbrella on a table or a bed.
-If a single woman drops her umbrella, she'll never marry.

its probable that it is only because  you cant get out of the door easily with an open umbrella and it could get damaged.so dont worry, if its raining put your brolly up outside the door....

sorry to change the subject from umbrellas but why is it bad luck to cut your toe nails on a sunday or put new shoes on a table???

Good grief - I didn't know umbrellas could be so treacherous!  Another 'dropping yer brolly' one is that dropping it on the floor means there will be a murder in the house.

I always thought it was bad luck to open them inside because it meant your pipes had burst...

You are more likly due to restricted space to get some one in the eye.
