Former School

I'm trying to find some info and pictures of a former junior school in the area of lozells , Birmingham , which was knocked down around in the 80/90's

I cant remember the actual name of the school - but i know the name of the road that it was off .

Is there a site that lists historical data / archive phots etc , for particular areas of the UK ?

The name of the Road is Gerrard Street , which is off Wheeler Street - lozells - birmingham

As you turn right from wheeler street unto gerrard street about 75 metres on the left is where this school courtyard entrance was , until it was demolished to make way for houses

How old would the school have been? The 1945 25" OS map (which was actually drawn up before the war, in 1938) doesn't show any schools on Gerrard Street.

The nearest schools shown are to be found by proceeding along Gerrard Street (away from Wheeler Street) until you get to the intersection with Lozells Street. Turning either left or right there would have brought you immediately to a school (on your left if you'd turned left or on your right if you'd turned right).

So unless the school was built after WWII (possibly due to bombing), it doesn't seem to have been on Gerrard Street itself.

It would be unusual though not impossible to have two schools with 75 metres of each other which is why I posted - maybe the photo will jog a memory.

Further to my post at 1806:

A bit more research suggests that the schools on the corner of Gerrard Street and Lozells Street were Lozells Girls School (on the right, as you turned right when walking away from Wheeler Street) and "the infant and junior schools" (with no name given in the relevant post, on the left if you turned left off Gerrard Street).

Perhaps that's what Bazile is referring to? If so, it seems to have been Lozells Street Primary School:

It was originally called Lozells Street Board school, having been set up in 1882. Further, it seems that there was actually an entrance to the school on Gerrard Street, which would satisfy Bazile's description.

In the street view i have posted which shows the bus at the junction - if you proceed along Gerrard street in the direction back from which the bus has just travelled, past the pub on the right and then pass the building with the white walls and carry on till you reach the church still on the right hand side .

Now at a distance between the Building with the white wall and the church , BUT on the opposite side of the road - was the entrance to the school , the school being set back from the road and down an incline -( there are now houses there built along there )

I'm not sure what age the building would have been , but it was an old building by the time of the seventies

Small world Mamyalynne, I used to go to the dentist in Wheeler street in the 50s and 60s!!
