Back in the day when I was married for the first time in the 60's. I did my shopping at a supermarket. At the checkout I enquired have I got my green shield stamps. The cashier assured me I had the right amount. Packed my bags and left. When I got home I checked my stamps and how much money I had left and discovered I hadn't paid for my weeks shopping!
I hesitated what to do. But it was a good half hour walk with baby in pram.
So I left it. I didn't go to that supermarket for a while and when I did I wore a hat!!!!
What would you have done?

I've arranged for Pc Plod to knock on your door first thing tomorrow morning, Caran, with his handcuffs at the ready ;-)

I'd have probably done what I've actually done on more than one occasion when I've got home and realised that I'd not paid for a meal in a restaurant. That's to phone up and apologise for my error, pointing out that it would be extremely convenient for me to return (as, in one case, I was over a hundred miles from a restaurant when I found that I'd not paid) and offering to post a cheque.

However that shouldn't necessarily be taken as meaning that I've led a totally blameless life ;-)

In those days Chris, I didn't have a bank account. Only cash. So a cheque was out of the question.
Also money was in short supply. I struggled every week to buy groceries. So I suppose I was grateful for the chance to save some money.
Exactly the same as you, Caran. I mean blimey you needed about 100,000 Greenshield stamps for a frying pan ( I know this c'us my mom used to make sure that i got the stamps from where I used to get my petrol as a teenager .

Anyway Caran. Trust me, that is nothing.
Worn a balaclava, maybe.

If a shop assistant is nice and gives me too much change I point it out to them.

If they aren't nice I pocket it and walk away with a smile.

Am I a bad person?
Interesting how you feel about making a mistake and feeling bad about I wonder how people in these scams do it days in and days out do they have no shame ,regrets or have they been programmed to be heartless . Getting back to what you are saying I once was over paid in change at a shop ,I pointed it out but got the face ate of me for even suggesting that the person , the owner could make a mistake .So fair enough I’ll keep the fiver with out any sense of guilt .
A few times I've discovered tools left in my car by mechanics.
If they did a good job I returned them.
If they did a bad job my toolbox increased in size.
Oh dear. Where to begin? How open should I be?
Put it this way, if I was catholic, I would be chewing the altar rails looking for absolution!
I was not a nice person.
I hope I am now.
once got so drunk in a restaurant, that i left without paying, once sober some hours later i went back in the early hours of the morning with an note and a cheque for more than the meal cost
The cashier must have been incompetent to issue the stamps but not take the payment.
Last week I returned a packet of wet wipes that himself had put in my shopping bag by mistake when packing the shopping...they had obviously been left by a previous customer who had paid for them. I still feel huge guilt about taking a pin from a haberdashers when I was about 11. I could not take something from a shop or a restaurant that I had not paid for ...... and if I did by mistake I would be back there paying for it the next day.
My daughter secreted a box of those tiny bars of chocolate in her buggy many years ago. They were on a shelf at her level. I did take them back but after being in the cosytoes of her buggy I suspect they'd melted.
Certainly when given too much change in big store c hains, never in small local shops. Two notes stuck together probably the loss of the person who paid for something before me and no way of tracing back. Found a purse once with no ID of any kind in a public loo. I knew if I handed it in it was likely to be kept by whoever I gave it to do I hung around a while in case someone came back looking for it. After that I gave the contents to help the aged less than £10, and the purse I binned.
Have left places without paying but usually gone back the next day. The one I felt guilty about was finding a triple row of real pearls in a charity shop. They were 75p I gave them the money I had about £15,but after a few years they went in a burglary. or I gave them away I can't remember. I hope someone wears them with pleasure.
If that's all you feel guilty about then you are most fortunate.
