What would have happened if the British comprehensively won the war. Would the US still have become the superpower it became in the 20th century?

The US was a lot smaller then and would have stayed smaller. The Louisianna purchase wouldn't have happened so the border would have stoped there.

I'd guess there'd have been expansion into the country by France and Britain - California is anybody's guess.

I'd say most like the country would have been carved up between England France and Spain with eventual independance under the commonwealth much like Canada.

So no probably not although you never can tell.

The Easter Rising was comprehensively put down in Ireland in 1916 and within 5 years the free state had been established with full independance 20 years later.

If it had been sucessful people might be posting questions like "If the Easter Rising had been put down would Ireland still be part of Great Britain"

interesting question although Britain could never have won the war, hopelessly outnumbered, esp when France and other European powers declared war against Britain as well, ensuring that the best ships and troops would have had to stay at 'home'. The main contributary to becoming a super-power was essentially the two world wars fought in europe, thus allowing the USA to enter the vacant market and replace colonial land power with a newer concept, economical power.
