The word Zion is an ancient Hebrew word that means refuge or Santuary, it gave the Jews in captivity hope. 'as in the Boney M song, 'When we remembered Zion', in this context, its another name for Jerusalem.
Nowadays, a Zionist can be taken as someone wanting Jerusalem as the one indivisable capital of Israel, and portayed as a fanatic, which may or may not be true, all depending on the person himself.
