BBC3 broadcast The body of Hitler last night (5 June 2006).
The Beeb usually repeats this type of programe several times.
It provided sufficient evidence for me to believe that the Russians discovered his burnt remains and took them with them when they were ordered out of Berlin. Parts ended up in Moscow. The Russians released details of the post-mortem in ~1970, confirming that his left one was indeed AWOL.
As semi-documented in the film Downfall, the Germans tried to burn Hitler and his wife in open air. Bodies do not burn properly in open air, which is why the Nazis built ovens to dispose of bodies.
For the record, it is a mistaken conception that Hitler was a vegetarian. He did eat meat. He was put on a diet of lightly cooked vegetables only for a short period to cure a persistent stomach problem. This led to the incorrect, but persistent, vegetarian myth.
