There are two origins for the suffix -wick or -wich. Some are undoubtedly from Scandinavian -vik meaning a creek or bay, and are found on the coast of the Danelaw. Others derive from the Anglo-Saxon word for port or place of trade and manufacture, so are not necessarily near the coast or an estuary.

Remains of Anglo-Saxon London have been found near the roundabout called Aldwych, which, sure enough, means the old town. Confusingly, the W in these words is sometimes pronounced, sometimes not: Gat-wick but Chizzick.
